FamiLAB teaches Arduino and Animatronic Puppets at Orlando Science Center’s Maker Saturday.
Every month leading up to the 2013 Orlando Mini Maker Faire on October 5th, OSC hosts a Maker Saturday. This month the theme was ‘Robots’ and the FamiLAB crew taught Intro to Arduino ‘Blinky’, and was topped off with each student making and controlling their own animatronic puppet. It was huge fun. Dave and the smartest and cutest kid in the world. Mac, Thanks for the awesome pictures.
Casting Class – Let’s make more of em!
The Feb. 2013 casting class was a success. We now have 12 more people who know how to make plastic copies of small parts. Normally it takes a bit over a day to make a high quality plastic copy of a part. This is because the mold material takes a while to set. We were making marginal copies of small parts inside 3 hours by using Alginate which sets in 6 minutes. This way we could explore all the aspects of complex casting in a short time frame. Unfortunately, that […]
Nixie Tubes Class
Nixie Tube Class Yes — I sat in on a Nixie Tube Class. Mike Lensman presented. This class was for members only, I had heard that it was a beta and that Mike was getting the kinks out of it. I thought the class was top notch and full of information. Let me recount some of the things I learned. This is Mike — He looks excited about the subject matter, that made me want to pay attention. High Voltage Mike took high voltage seriously. Even though the students wanted […]

Intro to Arduino Class – August 2011
On August 27th, FamiLAB held its first “Intro to Arduino” class at Cloudspace. The class sold out over a week in advance, and everyone was able to make it, so we had a full house of new Arduino enthusiasts. The students had a wide range of backgrounds – some with electronics and programming experience, others with no experience, but were curious about how they could use an Arduino in their projects. We even had 2 of the Boy Scouts that came as a follow-up to their Electronics merit badge they […]
FamiLAB Soldering Class – June 2011
I’M MAKING A NOTE HERE: OUR FIRST SOLDERING CLASS WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! On Saturday, June 25th, FamiLAB held its first soldering class. This class was designed to be a “practice run” before the first public soldering class in July. (Link) UPDATED: We’ve added a “Bring a kit” class in July for those that want help building a kit of their choice (Link) It was a great time, and led to a really energized FamiLAB business meeting in the afternoon. Special thanks to Cloudspace for hosting the event, to the […]
