If you have any questions about what was done or how it was done, feel free to ask in the comment section at the end of the post.
Familab goes to the Global Community Bio Summit
This year, the MIT Media Lab organized a global summit on community biotechnology. It was a great opportunity to meet in person, some of the people from all over the planet that FamiLAB members have been interacting with online for years, and to catch up with some old friends who were crucial in getting our biolab up and running. A post shared by MIT Media Lab (@mitmedialab) on Sep 25, 2017 at 3:07pm PDT The pre-conference activities included visits to the Novartis community lab, a tour of Artisan’s asylum, […]
FAMiLab on lockdown during Hurricane Irma…
Hurricane Irma is now posing an imminent threat to the state of Florida this weekend. It is very important that we remind you, FamiLAB is NOT a storm shelter location. As of Thursday, 09/07/2017 at 10:00PM EST, FamiLAB will go into lock down mode for the remainder of the storm. During this time, keycards will not work and power will be turned off to all non-essential equipment. Once the storm has passed, we will assess any damage and re-open hopefully soon after. I repeat, FamiLAB is NOT a registered storm shelter. […]
Ikea Storage Rack Hack
Inspired by Adam Savage’s shop organization (As seen on Tested) I have been using these Stanley organizers for a while now for organizing my hardware, cutting tools, electronics, and robot parts, but they’re always had a fatal flaw; While they stack well, it’s really tough to get to the second-from-the-bottom one without removing the entire stack above it. I was thinking about making a rack out of wood, and while an elegant solution it would have cost $70 in materials and a whole weekend to make. I needed to […]
Machining Things With the HAAS
Here’s a quick demo video of FamiLAB’s HAAS VF-1 CNC Mill chewing up some aluminum for fun. If you would like to learn more about this machine and all of the other neat tools at the FamiLAB metal shop: Come out to the Open House on the first Tuesday of the month. Attend a Machine Shop night on Fridays after 6. Attend a Machine Shop 101 class, usually held once monthly. Join the lab and spend some quality time in the shop! Attend a Fusion 360 Class and learn how […]
Building My First RaceQuad
Hi, my name is John Lamp (aka jdbugman). I have been into RC anything for as long as I can remember. I have done cars, planes, helicopters, battlebots, robots, even some home automation. Then someone showed me RotorRiot on YouTube and was so blown away that I had to try it. It seems like there is nothing that you can’t do with these quadcopters;watching the videos, it seems like you are flying! The thing that was stopping me from getting into this hobby was there was so many choices out […]
Former President Obama stopped by the lab last Saturday. To say that it was unexpected would be an understatement. Willa was in the front room watching Food Wars, when out of nowhere the former POTUS just walks through the front door. Without missing a beat, Obama plopped himself on one of the front couches. Immediately following him were Secret Service holding guns…um..laser guns.. Willa, still with eyes wide open tried uttering out some words when Obama interrupted with “Don’t be so shocked, Willa. I’m unemployed now, and I love anime. […]
FamiLAB Annual Meeting 2017
This year’s annual meeting was held at the Lab on Sunday, March 27th. The meeting started about 3:30 PM, and was attended by about 50 members. The current board was introduced, and we were reminded about FamiLAB’s mission. Mike King presented an review of FamiLAB’s history, starting in 2009 and going through 4 generations, culminating in the vibrant community we have today. Achievements of the most recent year included development of the machine shop and DIY Bio Lab, progress in welding and darkroom, a slew of new group activities including […]
