FamiLAB Workshops at Otronicon
We’ve taken our regular workshops on the road to Otronicon, a video game inspired conference that showcases the best in tech that Orlando has to offer. Come learn to solder, program in Scratch, see the Raspberry Pi in action or learn more about the Arduino platform! The workshops are free, except for Learn to Solder which has a materials cost. More info is available on the Otronicon website.
2012 Annual Meeting
Just one year ago we were in a tiny storage unit and were holding classes (and our Annual Meeting) at a local business so we could have air conditioning! Today, we’re in a ten times larger space, our membership has tripled, we’ve been in the Orlando Sentinel, the Orlando Weekly, made Orlando’s first Maker Faire a reality, and have taught over one thousand people how to solder. All this was made possible through your support of our mission to “improve ourselves and to enrich the world around us”. In order […]
Stop the Presses!
With our big push recently for Orlando Mini Maker Faire, we drew a bunch of attention among the press. It started with the Orlando Weekly’s Ashley Belanger, who herself is behind another craft fair in the Orlando Area known as the Grandma Party Bazaar. After visiting our hackerspace she filed this report. But that was just the tip of the iceberg… Next was the Orlando Sentinel’s Ricardo Ramirez-Buxeda, who came to our space, shot a bunch of video, and interviewed some of our Makers. He filed this report. Ricardo also […]
Hackerspace Passport Stamping
FamiLAB has had a few visitors over the years, with several in the past month or so. When [Spurious] visited from Hacker Consortium in Nashville, TN, he asked if we were stamping hackerspace passports. We’re still working on a logo, but JBC had been playing around with etching plates for printing on our laser cutter and decided to give it a shot. The results could be better, but at least [Spurious] can leave Orlando with one more stamp in his passport!
COFFEE MUG – ‘Central Orlando Florida FAMiLab Electronics Enthusiasts Makerbot Users Group’
We are starting a Makerbot Users Group and calling it COFFEEMUG — the ‘Central Orlando Florida FAMiLab Electronics Enthusiasts Makerbot Users Group’. Witty, eh? The group is up for anyone involved in home-use rapid prototyping projects, such as but not limited to: Makerbot, RepRap, Ultimaker, laser and ceramic sintering, vacuumforming and anything CNC. We communicate through a mailing list: https://familab.org/mailman/listinfo/coffeemug_familab.org We met today. Present was MakerBot #394, #421, and #736, along with a RepRap Mendel. Photos!
Let me start by thanking everyone who donated to our Kickstarter project. The support from the community was overwhelming and we can’t thank you enough! It took a couple of weeks to finish transferring funds from Kickstarter. Less the fees charged by Kickstarter and Amazon, we raised approximately $2100. I had spent some time researching laser engraver/cutters prior to the start of our fundraiser. The most useful resource for hands on information was the laser engraving forum at CNCzone.com. We considered something DIY along the lines of a Makerbot or RepRap, both of […]
Well, sort of. FAMiLab has officially incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in the State of Florida. And it only took a year! I first met with tetsu, Cheshire, and other founding members last September at a local Panera Bread. There were six or seven of us at that first meeting, some of us meeting each other face to face for the first time. I don’t know about the rest of the guys, but that night I knew I had met a special group of people. Within a month we had […]
