Help Support FamiLAB on #CyberMonday and #GivingTuesday!
It’s that time of year again! As the post-Thanksgiving food coma fades and we all realize that the holiday season is upon us, everyone turns to picking out the perfect holiday presents for friends, family, and white elephant gift exchanges. As you do, we’d love to remind you that if you shop at https://smile.amazon.com/ch/27-3490023 , Amazon donates a portion of eligible purchases to FamiLAB. It’s an easy way to help support our community this winter season (and especially on Cyber Monday)! It’s also almost #GivingTuesday , a global day of giving […]
Class: Pisanki, Redux!
As last year’s pisanki classes went really well, I decided to host another this year. With a small but enthusiastic class, we had a great time and made some lovely art. Thanks to our attendees for a well-spent Saturday afternoon!
FamiLAB Goes to the White House
“Wait, that email is real?” Three weeks ago, FamiLAB, along with dozens of other makerspaces, hackerspaces, and fab labs, received a Request for Information from the Senior Advisor for Making to the White House, Andrew Coy. The RFI asked for things like our operating budget, the type of space we are (non-profit, club, etc.), the subject areas/work areas we offer, and more. Two days after replying to the email, I received an invitation from the Office of Science and Technology Policy to come to Washington, DC to participate in a […]
Thank You, Budget Dumpster!
FamiLAB gets a lot of email. Some emails are inquiries into membership, some are class requests, others yet announce makerspace and hackerspace contests that we can enter. Once in a blue moon, we get an email like we recently got from Budget Dumpster, offering support to DIYers and Makers, asking if we have a wishlist of tools or materials to which they could contribute. Passing that email to one of our members who’s passionate about tool improvement at the lab resulted in a series of emails discussing lab needs. An […]
Class: Pisanki – the Art of Polish Easter Eggs
As a promised follow-up to my post on making pisanki (Polish Easter eggs), I hosted a class on Saturday to teach people the basics. I had a great group (I mean, they even patiently waited 15 minutes for class to start while we were waiting for people stuck in traffic) who made some pretty nice pisanki. There was so much demand for a second round, both from people in the class and people who missed the class, that I’ll be hosting another one in 3 or so weeks! Extra thanks […]
Pisanki – Polish Egg Decorating
Most of the things I make are for gifts, especially when I’m too crunched on time to do many projects. One of the gifts I made this year was a BB8 pisanka (plural pisanki), a Polish Easter egg. (Yes, this was several months too early for Easter, but I figured it might be cute enough that no one would notice.) I was taught that pisanki are a Polish tradition* imbued with symbolism, with dozens of markings meaning dozens of things; a fair amount of thought and reflection goes into the […]
FamiLAB’s New Welding Area
Though I’m still very young at welding, I really enjoy it. I think it’s partly the concentration required, partly the art of it, partially the skill and seriousness required, but I enjoy using electricity to meld metals together. FamiLAB has never really had a dedicated welding area; we’ve had a couple of flux core welders and a stick welder, but they’ve mostly sat around unused. We ended up going to http://www.skilledwelding.com.au/ and hiring the best professional welders. The most welding action we’ve seen has been while working on our Power […]
Christmas Crafting at FamiLAB
FamiLAB: not just for hackers! On Saturday, November 21, we got crafty in the lab classroom and made Christmas ornaments. The main project was a felt “hobby horse” candy cane cover. We also made clothespin reindeer ornaments. As the photo shows, every horse was totally unique; some (like the felt Cthulhu) more unique than others. We had a great time and will definitely offer other crafting workshops in the future. Check back regularly to see what’s coming up! (Thanks to Artemisia for the content/post!)
Altamonte-Wekiva Springs Life Article
Chip Colandreo, the Associate Publisher of Altamonte-Wekiva Springs Life Magazine, came out to visit FamiLAB and learn about who we are and what we do. As a result of that visit and subsequent ones for pictures and interviews, a great article was written! Check out the story about the “Makers’ Mecca” on page 20.
Build-Out Update: Videos!
Hi, all! Things have certainly been busy here at FamiLAB as we continue to work extremely hard on our new space. We’ve got most of our drywall up and mudded, the electrical is coming along nicely, the networking is looking great, and so many things are coming together. Our landlord, Dave Woods, has continued taking and posting a lot of videos of our progress. We’ve been linking them in the members-only section of our forums, but we’ve had non-members come out to help, too (thanks, guys!), so we wanted to […]
