Building a Remote Control Lawn Mower
Every since the movie ‘Honey I shrunk the Kids’ I’ve wanted a remote control lawnmower and some grass shears. Even more so during July in Florida when the temperature and humidity compete for the high point. I always thought about it but never moved on it until a friend gave me a half finished project before he moved out of state. I’m not sure what he was going to build but he kept all the suspension for from the Jazzy mobility scooter (that’s my best guess as to where these […]

Making a Power Wheels Racer at FamiLAB!
For this year’s Maker Faire Orlando, I decided to make a power wheels racer. It was an amazing adventure that anyone who can, should absolutely participate in! Keep scrolling to see a photo log of how it was made and photos from the event! If you have any questions about what was done or how it was done, feel free to ask in the comment section at the end of the post.
Familab goes to the Global Community Bio Summit
This year, the MIT Media Lab organized a global summit on community biotechnology. It was a great opportunity to meet in person, some of the people from all over the planet that FamiLAB members have been interacting with online for years, and to catch up with some old friends who were crucial in getting our biolab up and running. A post shared by MIT Media Lab (@mitmedialab) on Sep 25, 2017 at 3:07pm PDT The pre-conference activities included visits to the Novartis community lab, a tour of Artisan’s asylum, […]
FAMiLab on lockdown during Hurricane Irma…
Hurricane Irma is now posing an imminent threat to the state of Florida this weekend. It is very important that we remind you, FamiLAB is NOT a storm shelter location. As of Thursday, 09/07/2017 at 10:00PM EST, FamiLAB will go into lock down mode for the remainder of the storm. During this time, keycards will not work and power will be turned off to all non-essential equipment. Once the storm has passed, we will assess any damage and re-open hopefully soon after. I repeat, FamiLAB is NOT a registered storm shelter. […]
Last Minute Eclipse Viewer
So it’s the day before the eclipse, Amazon is out of stock on certified sun viewing glasses, but you still want to see the sun? Don’t try your sunglasses and hope for the best! You can make a pinhole viewer with stuff you have around the house, and see the eclipse without risking your sight. In these directions, I’ve used a handy cereal box, but any opaque box that you can cut into will do. (A Pringles tube would work great!) First, cut a hole in one end of the […]
Ikea Storage Rack Hack
Inspired by Adam Savage’s shop organization (As seen on Tested) I have been using these Stanley organizers for a while now for organizing my hardware, cutting tools, electronics, and robot parts, but they’re always had a fatal flaw; While they stack well, it’s really tough to get to the second-from-the-bottom one without removing the entire stack above it. I was thinking about making a rack out of wood, and while an elegant solution it would have cost $70 in materials and a whole weekend to make. I needed to […]
Machining Things With the HAAS
Here’s a quick demo video of FamiLAB’s HAAS VF-1 CNC Mill chewing up some aluminum for fun. If you would like to learn more about this machine and all of the other neat tools at the FamiLAB metal shop: Come out to the Open House on the first Tuesday of the month. Attend a Machine Shop night on Fridays after 6. Attend a Machine Shop 101 class, usually held once monthly. Join the lab and spend some quality time in the shop! Attend a Fusion 360 Class and learn how […]
